Ta-Ta Tata’s – Abby’s Mastectomy Surgery
No contributions yet 120 days to go
Join me in saying Ta-Ta to my tatas!
This October, I’ll be undergoing a preventative double mastectomy after testing positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation. This decision hasn’t been made lightly, and I’m moving forward with the full support of my medical team
I found out in 2019 that I inherited the mutation from my dad, who was also BRCA2 positive and sadly passed away from prostate cancer related to his mutation. Since then, I’ve been diligent with regular breast screenings, including ultrasounds, MRI’s and several biopsies. Most recently, in June, a phyllodes tumour was found that needs to be removed and tested. With that news, I’ve decided it’s time to take the next step and follow the recommended preventative path.
I am sad to part with my breasts, I am a big fan of mine and they have served me well over the years but I am also very grateful. I recognize what a privilege it is to make this decision proactively while I’m still young and cancer-free. Over the years I have been a part of a few support groups – Shoutout to The Breasties and Inherited Cancers Australia, where I’ve heard again and again that taking this step before a cancer diagnosis is empowering and I couldn’t agree more.
If you’d like to support me in the months ahead, I’ve put together a recovery registry with a few things that will help me during healing. If that’s too much, no problem – a kind thought, message, or just taking a moment to stop and smell the flowers is more than enough.
Love you. Mean it. xo – Abby
