February 22, 2020 Melbourne Birthday

14 contributions Event Finished

I have been overwhelmed by a huge number of requests to set up this gift registry for my 40th birthday.
I don’t usually like to make a big deal of birthdays. But as someone with "eclectic tastes", I understand I can be quite hard to buy for.
Of course, you do not have to buy me a present — I will also be taking cash donations on Saturday 22 February. Recommended donation is $40.

Pay the Rent

Pay the Rent

My birthday celebration is taking place on unceded Wurundjeri land. So I'm collecting donations to Pay the Rent to Traditional Owners — and choosing W.A.R. because I respect and support their leadership here in Melbourne. W.A.R. is "a collective of young Aboriginal people committed to the cause of decolonization and the philosophy of Aboriginal nationalism - resistance and revival" (from their Facebook page). Amongst many ongoing achievements, they're the activists who bring you the huge Invasion Day protests in Melbourne. Everything else on this gift registry is somewhere between self-indulgence and sarcasm — but this is very real. Thanks for any $$$ you can give.

Trae Young NBA jersey

Trae Young NBA jersey

In 2019/20 I have gone deep down a rabbithole marked N.B.A. This jersey will formalise my allegiance to the Atlanta Hawks — whom I first chose to support 30 years ago. I think it was because they had a 5' 7" star called Spud Webb (and I was always short). But maybe it was because they used to be the St Louis Hawks — based in Missouri in the hometown of my only first cousins, the Ludbrooks. I can't really remember. Anyway, much like other clubs I follow (hello Melbourne FC), Atlanta is not very good. But we do have an incredibly talented young player in Trae Young. Watch his YouTube highlights! At 6' 2" he looks tiny on the court, but of course he's taller than me :)

Midlife crisis earrings

Midlife crisis earrings

This started as a joke and will soon end in bling. For months I was saying I couldn't afford a midlife crisis sports car (although hang on, is it too late to add one to this registry?) Anyway that was the joke — I was going to have to get my ears pierced instead. Then one night in January, I was refining this champagne comedy on some friends — who called my bluff. The next thing I knew, I was down at Renegade Art Society in West Brunswick, collecting my birthday present from Sammy and Gus: a needle through each ear. So I've asked my friend Atelier Paul Stewart to make me some sick midlife crisis earrings. Which I also can't really afford. Please halp.

Party costs

Party costs

If you're racist and/or you don't want me to have beautiful things and/or you'd rather experience a direct return on your investment, then contributing to party costs might be the option for you. Any $$$ collected here will go to food, drinks, ice — and possibly extra sound or lighting equipment that might be needed. In the unlikely event of an embarrassment of riches, I promise to run cash prizes on the night — for Best Dressed, Least Dressed, Worst Dancer, etc — to ensure a merit-based redistribution of wealth amongst key stakeholders. (As opposed to some kind of pie-in-the-sky universal basic income.)
